Obituary for Alford "Dilly" R Dillehay

Alford Royal Dillehay, known to his family and friends as Dilly, went to be with the Lord on Thursday March 16, 2017. He was born on October 29, 1933 at a private residence in Haxtun, Colorado to Henry Royal and Mary Margaret (Woodhams) Dillehay. Born during the Great Depression and in order to make a living his family moved to Denver, to the Western slope of Colorado and then back to Sedgwick Country. His father engaged in farming at that time. Alford started his education in a one room school building and then to school in the Ovid, Colorado school system. His parents moved into Ovid where his father started a truck line primarily hauling livestock. Alford began assisting his father in hauling livestock at 14. He was drafted into the Unites States Army and served for 2 years in the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1955 in the 5th Armored Division. Upon his honorable discharge Alford returned to Ovid and joined his father in the Dillehay and Son truck line. Alford would end up driving truck for over 60 years of his life. In 1955, on a dare, he asked Rozella Elizabeth Weinbender to a movie on New Year’s Eve. On January 19, 1957 Alford and Rozella were married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Julesburg. Alford and Rozella would remain married, in love and as best friends throughout his life. To their union a son, Douglas, and a daughter, Debra, were born.

Alford spent the remainder of his life after returning from Korea in Ovid. He was part of the fabric of the community as an Ovid town trustee (20 years), Mayor of Ovid (6 years,) Platte Valley RE-3 board of education trustee and secretary (4 years), Ovid Volunteer Fire Department (25 years) as both a member and also a tenure as Chief. He was also a member of the Elks, Lions, American Legion and stemming from his youth the Ovid Oilers Car Club. Alford and Rozella were also member of the Ovid United Methodist Church. After the sale of Dillehay and Son truck line Alford started DKO natural fertilizer company. He sold his interests In DKO in 1974 and went to work for Sedgwick County. In 1979 Alford went to work for the Pacific Intermountain Express truck line which merged to become Ryder Truck Line and to Northwest Truck Line. After retirement from commercial trucking he worked for Reed Merrill Implement as a parts person. In retirement Alford continued to drive truck for various farmers during harvest and hauling commodities to market until 2014.

In 2009 Alford was diagnosed with Cancer (myeloma) which he battled until his passing. The final 3 years were very challenging for Alford and Rozella. The grace of God and Jesus Christ, the support of the church community, and the friends of Ovid and Sedgwick County were invaluable to enduring this time.

Alford is survived by his wife and the love of his life Rozella, son Doug and spouse Terri, grandson Alex, daughter Debra and spouse Cathy and numerous family members and friends. He remains deeply loved and missed by his family.
