Obituary for GN Hurst

Our beloved father, GN Hurst, 89, of Sterling, passed away Friday, November 2, 2018 at home of natural causes. Visitation will be from 2 pm to 6 pm Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Tennant Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Thursday, Nov. 8 at the First Christian Church with Pastor Lew Champ officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

Dad was born on July 1, 1929 to Garrett and Mary Ollie (Lawrence) Hurst in Loco, Oklahoma. He grew up in Velma with his brothers, Billy Joe, Clyde, Raymond, and Ralph in a home filled with love and hard work. At six years of age, he and his father went to pick cotton, which started a lifetime of hard work. He had many good times with his family.

GN graduated from Loco High School in Oklahoma. He served during the Korean War from 1951-1952 as a Tank Operator. He married Katherine Todenhoft in 1957. They started married life with $5.00 and a wing and a prayer. They lived in Duncan, OK where GN worked on oil rigs. GN and Kay moved back to Sterling with 5 children and $11.00 to work for Sterling Construction. GN then worked for Maynard Sonnenberg, later forming HUSO, Inc. GN bought out Maynard and formed Hurst Construction which operated for many years. The business partnership ended, but not the friendship. Hurst Construction built flood control dams in Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. He also built roads in Beaver Creek, CO as it opened as a new development. He also did resurfacing on missile base roads and built golf courses. GN had many loyal and good employees whom he loved. Hurst Construction continued for many years until his retirement in the late 80’s. GN was also a partner in various businesses around Sterling including: Lebsock Feed and Seed, H&S Machine Shop, and Iliff Farm and Ranch. He was still farming at the time of his passing.

GN and Kay traveled to many countries: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Fiji, Hawaii, Scotland, Ireland, Malaysia, and England through LICA (Land Improvement Contractors of America). GN and Kay also loved to travel in their RV going to Alaska or to Oklahoma to do their jug line catfishing.

GN served as an Elder and Deacon at First Christian Church. He loved serving others, especially going to the shut-ins and serving them communion. He was an active member of the Gideon’s and every year as he was able to, he gave Bibles to the new and returning students at Northeastern Junior College. These same students were recipients of scholarships given by GN and Kay. He was a generous contributor to his Church, Colorado Christian Home, and was a friend of 4-H.

GN loved and cared for his whole family. He was a very generous and compassionate person. He always wanted to make sure nobody ever went hungry! Dad will be sincerely missed by his whole family and carried in our hearts always. Amen!

GN is survived by his children Jenifer (Gordon) Felzien, Jean (Clyde) Mares, Daniel Hurst, Mary (Joe) Gonzales, and Machelle (Randy) Grossart; grandchildren April Potyondy, Jon-Chris Felzien, Amanda Basinger, Nathan Mares, Casey Hurst, Danielle Gosset, Garrett Walker, Sara Newth, Virginia Allen, Valarie Manning, and Marshal Gonzales; great-grandchildren Kylie Rose Hurst, Jeremiah Potyondy, Jerrick Potyondy, Emmalynn Crose, Eden Basinger, Elijah Cordova, Elizabeth Cordova, DJ Newth, Samuel Manning, Arianna Manning, Dalilah Allen, Ticeahkie Allen; brothers Clyde Hurst of Hastings, OK, Raymond (Mary Alice) Hurst of Lake Charles, CA, and Ralph (Hannaelore) Hurst of Houston, TX; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his spouse Katherine, parents Garrett and Mary, sister Betty Jean Hurst, and brother Billy Joe Hurst.
