Paul Edgar Vandenbark, 80, of Fleming, died Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, his home after a yearlong battle with cancer. The family will observe a private graveside service, with inurnment at Sunset Memorial Garden in Sterling.

Paul was born in Fleming on Oct. 13, 1929, to Carl F. Vandenbark and Mary Slizeski Vandenbark. He graduated from Fleming High School in 1947. On Feb. 4, 1951, he married Virginia Mae Keller. They have lived in the Fleming area for 59 years and were involved in dryland farming and cattle ranching, in addition to Paul’s grain trucking. They raised five sons who all live and work in the Fleming area, following in their father’s footsteps with their love of farming. Paul and his friend Harold Yost, owned and operated V-Y Truckline for seven years, later selling out to Harold and Maynard Yost. He then hauled freight for the Montgomery Ward Store in Sterling. Paul later bought a grain truck and drove for 61 years until his health forced him to retire in September 2008.

Paul served on the boards for the Fleming School District RE-3 and the Fleming Coop (now Grainland Coop). He also served in the National Guard. Paul enjoyed watching his sons and then his grandkids play sports. They are a very athletic family and were his pride and joy.

Paul is survived by his wife, Virginia; sons, Kenneth and his wife Patty, James and wife Cindy, Robert and wife Cyndi, Michael and wife Carmen and Gary and wife Samm. They have 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his parents. Tennant Funeral Home & Crematory in Sterling handled the arrangements. Any donations made to the family will be used to set up a scholarship for Fleming students, donations to Hospice of the Plains and to Cooperating Ministry of Logan County.
