Leonard William “Pat” Schultz, 95, of Julesburg, CO, entered into peaceful eternal rest early on March 6, 2010, at the Sedgwick County Nursing Home in Julesburg, Colorado. Visitation was held Monday March 8 at Austin-Tennant Funeral Home in Julesburg. Funeral Services were held Tuesday March 9th at 10am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Julesburg with Pastor Trent Christensen officiating. Burial followed in Hillside Cemetery. Leonard was born on August 1, 1914 near Rising City, Nebraska. His parents were William Arthur Schultz and Cora Elsie (Chambers). He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. When he was 2 years old the family moved to a farm south of Julesburg.

He went to a one-room school house up through the 8th grade. He then helped his dad work on the family farm. During that time a hired hand gave him the nickname of “Pat” simply because he said he didn’t look like a Leonard. Pat worked on the farm, as a cook in a cafe in Julesburg, and also in the bakery. He was an avid baseball player and was even scouted by St. Louis as a third baseman. He turned down the opportunity but continued to play for the town of Julesburg for many years. He was then inducted into the U.S. Army on October 17, 1941. He served in Battery A 74th Field Artillery Battalion as a mess Sergeant. Pat served in France, Belgium, and Germany. He was honorably discharged on October 30, 1945. Pat was very proud of his service to his country. He was a life-time member of the American Legion Post 105 and VFW. He was also a bugler in the Drum-and-Bugle Corp.

Upon his return to Julesburg he met and married Mildred Loretta Josephine Dittmar. They were married on June 15, 1950. Five children were born and raised under their loving care: Margaret Ann, Wanda Kay, William Arthur, Patricia Eileen, and Maureen Donnell. Pat worked at Great Western Sugar Factory as a boiler house foreman until his retirement. Pat enjoyed gardening, painting, watching the Rockies, and spending time with his family.

Preceding “Pat” in leaving this earthly life were his parents, his beloved wife Mildred, sisters Lois Marie Schultz and Evelyn Mae (Repp), and brother Merle Gottlieb Schultz. He is survived by sisters Inez Irene Boehm of Julesburg, CO, Betty June Wise of Delano, CA, his children Margaret and Richard Lauer of Merino, CO; Wanda K. Lowery of Julesburg, CO, William Arthur Schultz of Julesburg, CO, Patricia and James Devie of Crook, CO, and Maureen Donnell Christensen of Northglenn, CO,. He is also survived by 9 grand daughters, 1 grandson, 8 great-granddaughters, 2 great-grandsons, 1 great-great-granddaughter, 2 great-great grandsons, 3 sister-in-laws, and many friends and relatives. Memorials can be made in Leonard’s name to Disabled American Veterans PO Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301. Austin-Tennant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
