Leo Charles Schweitzer, 83, of Pratt, Kan., died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, in Sterling. Services will be held at a later date. Mr. Schweitzer was born on May 22, 1926, in Pittsburg, Kan., to Leo A. and Helen A. (O’Connell) Schweitzer. He graduated from High School at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Pittsburg, Kan. and Pittsburg State College. He was in the U.S. Army Airborne and worked as an agent telegrapher for the Rock Island Railroad.

He married Mary Jane Tolliver on Oct. 29, 1949, in Frontenac, Kan. They were married for 60 years. He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion in Pratt, Kan., for 40 years and the Sigma Tau Fraternity in Pittsburg for two years. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening and fishing. He was a Jay Hawk fan and enjoyed watching sports.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; sons, Bruce L. and wife Pat, and Mark K., all of Sterling; daughter, Darlene Lenz and husband Duane of Layfayette; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Patricia Hoffman of Pittsburgh, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo A. and Helen; and sister, Helen Marie Drietzler.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Crohn’s Foundation.
