Born Feb. 2, 1914, in Tate, Neb, Frank was the son of Clarence Ward and Frieda Mae Mort, and the younger brother to Lester Mort. He graduated from Venango High School in 1930 and shortly thereafter, Frank began dating his future wife, Evelyn Estella From. The two married Aug. 12, 1936.
Frank attended the University of Wyoming, where he played on three hockey teams and became a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He took a strong interest in the field of geology and graduated in 1937 with a Bachelor of Arts. He went on to get his master’s degree in 1939.
After college, Frank became an accomplished petroleum geologist and worked for a number of independent oil operators, as well as the prominent multinational oil company, Shell Oil.
In 1942, Frank and Evelyn started their family and welcomed their first daughter, Janet Diane, on Jan. 20. In 1945, they welcomed their second daughter, Frances Jean, on Oct. 18. Over the years, Frank and Evelyn lived in Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado, and eventually settled in Sterling, in 1963 where they lived for the next 46 years.
While in Sterling, Frank and Evelyn owned and operated Western Agri Realty. Frank was also very active in the Sterling community, where he became a member of the Rotary Club, the Elks Club and the Sterling Country Club. He was an avid golfer, recreational hunter and fisherman, and thoroughly enjoyed traveling the world.
Farming became an extremely important part of Frank’s life and he remained actively involved in the management of his agricultural properties located in Colorado and Nebraska through the age of 95. Frank also loved being a grandfather and great-grandfather, and lived for the times he spent visiting with friends and family.
Frank is survived by his wife of 73 years, Evelyn; his daughter, Jean; his six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Lester; an infant baby brother; and his daughter, Janet Shafer.
