David W. Tennant was born in Sterling, Colorado, in 1953 and attended Sterling Schools graduating from High School in 1972. He attended Northeastern Junior College graduating in 1974, and then attended San Francisco College of Mortuary Science graduating in 1975. Dave returned to Colorado working in Sterling for a few years then moved to Denver working there for a year. He then managed a funeral home and flower shop in Lead, South Dakota, for a year. Dave started and managed a funeral home for the Archdiocese of Denver at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Denver, Colorado, for 4 ½ years.

He returned to Sterling in 1985 and purchased Hettinger Funeral Home, in 1993 he purchased Thompson Mortuary in Holyoke, Colorado, from Diane Thompson, then in 1994 he purchased Thompson Mortuary in Haxtun, Colorado, from Tommy Thompson. Dave has been a licensed apprentice and funeral director - embalmer for 37 years. In 2004, he sold Haxtun and Holyoke Funeral Home to Chris and Brad Gerk. In 2007, Dave purchased Austin Funeral Home in Julesburg, Colorado.

Dave is presently the Coroner for Logan County and is a Certified Death Investigator also trained in eye enucleation. Dave is a member of the First Christian Church in Sterling, Sterling Rotary Club, Sterling Elks Lodge, Board member for Hospice of the Plains and NJC Foundation, and Sterling Country Club and former board member. He is a past board member of High Plains Easter Seals. Dave also operated an art studio producing stain glass, windows, bronze and marble sculptures and acrylic paintings. He enjoys golfing and working out. Dave is married and has 4 grown children and 3 granchildren. His 2 sons now work with him in the business.
