David W. Tennant Owner

David W. Tennant was born in Sterling, Colorado, in 1953 and attended Sterling Schools graduating from High School in 1972.  He attended Northeastern Junior College graduating in 1974, and then attended San Francisco College of Mortuary Science graduating in 1975.  Dave returned to Colorado working in Sterling for a few years then moved to Denver working there for a year.  He then managed a funeral home and flower shop in Lead, South Dakota, for a year.  Dave started and managed a funeral home for the Archdiocese of Denver at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Denver, Colorado, for 4 ½ years.

He returned to Sterling in 1985 and purchased Hettinger Funeral Home, in 1993 he purchased Thompson Mortuary in Holyoke, Colorado, from Diane Thompson, and then in 1994 he purchased Thompson Mortuary in Haxtun, Colorado, from Tommy Thompson.  

Dave has been a licensed apprentice and funeral director - embalmer for 42 years.  In 2004, he sold Haxtun and Holyoke Funeral Home to Chris and Brad Gerk.  In 2007, Dave purchased Austin Tennant Funeral in Julesburg, Colorado.

Dave is presently the Coroner for Logan County and is a Certified Death Investigator also trained in eye nucleation.  Dave holds license and certification in Colorado, South Dakota and Nebraska.

Dave is a member of the First Christian Church in Sterling, Sterling Rotary Club, Sterling Elks Lodge, Sons of the American Legion, and the NRA.  He is a former board member of Northeastern Junior College Foundation, Hospice of the Plains, Sterling Arts Council, Family Resource Center, and High Plains Easter Seals.

Dave also operated an art studio producing stain glass, windows, bronze and marble sculptures and acrylic paintings. He enjoys golfing and working out. Dave is married and has 4 children, 7 grandchildren.  His 2 sons, David and Justin, work with him in the business.

David E. Tennant Certified Mortuary Science Practitioner

David E. Tennant was raised in Sterling after parents Dave and Vicki bought Hettinger Funeral Home in 1985.  He attended Sterling schools and graduated from Sterling High School in 1999.  He then graduated from Devry University in Phoenix in 2002 with his bachelors in Computer Information Systems. He returned to Sterling and started working at Tennant Funeral Home in 2004. David went back to school for Mortuary Science, graduating from Arapahoe Community College in 2008.  David is a Certified Mortuary Science Practitioner through the Colorado Funeral Directors Association and a Certified Crematory Operator through the National Funeral Directors Association.

David has also been a Certified Death Investigator since 2007 and is currently the Chief Deputy Coroner in Logan County.  He is a member of the Sterling Lions Club and the Sterling Elks Lodge. He enjoys numerous things, but especially golfing, shooting pool, and various landscaping projects. David is a single dad living in Sterling with his 2 boys, Toren and Talon.

Justin D. Tennant Certified Mortuary Science Practitioner

In 2005 Justin D. Tennant started his full time work at Tennant Funeral Home & Crematory as a Funeral Director/Embalmer. In 2007 he moved to Julesburg, CO to manage Austin-Tennant Funeral Home when it was acquired by the Tennant family. In 2009 Justin earned Colorado’s highest distinction in funeral care as a Certified Mortuary Science Practitioner. In 2012 Justin returned to Sterling to assist with the higher volume of deaths, and now splits his time between Julesburg and Sterling.

He is a graduate of Sterling High School, graduate of Northeastern Junior College with an associate degree in Psychology, graduate of Arapahoe Community College with an associate degree of applied science in Mortuary Science. He has been a Deputy Coroner in Logan County since earning his death investigator certification in 2006 from the Colorado Coroner Association. Justin continues to seek education and certification in Mortuary Science and Death Investigation to better serve our clients and citizens of Logan County.

Justin and his wife Jennifer have two children Teagan, and Jackson. Jennifer is our office manager at the funeral home. Justin and Jennifer enjoy time with their family and friends, and watching and teaching their children in the various sports and activities in which they participate.
